SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Extending its leadership in
the low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) marketplace,
National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE: NSM - News) today unveiled the industry's
first LVDS-compliant crosspoint switch with a data rate of 2.5 Gigabit per
second (Gbps). LVDS delivers the speed of emitter coupled logic (ECL) with
the power and price of CMOS technology. National's new four input, four
output crosspoint switch, the DS90CP04, consumes half the power and occupies
half the board area compared to competing switches on the market. Its
power- and space-saving features are ideal for multiple-port line cards in
"carrier grade" voice and data network applications. The product's
cost-effectiveness and high-speed are also attractive for Gigabit Ethernet and
digital video applications. (www.national.com/pf/DS/DS90CP04.html)
(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20020705/NSCLOGO )National's new DS90CP04 crosspoint switch allows customers to design LVDS
backplane systems for system performance boost while lowering power
consumption. Benefits include:
- Versatility: The versatile LVDS I/O takes LVPECL (Low Voltage Positive
ECL), CML (Current Mode Logic) or LVDS inputs and provides CML or LVDS outputs
- Size: The switch's small size (6 mm X 6 mm) allows customers to use a
small architectural building block and to distribute the array across several
devices; therefore, power density is lower and system cooling is easier.
- Speed: The 2.5 Gbps speed allows the new device to be used in a broad
variety of applications from OC12 (622 Mbps) to OC48 rates (STM-16)
- Power savings: Power consumption is merely 575 mW typical at 2.5 Gbps,
50 percent less than existing solutions on the marketplace
- Flexibility: The pre-programmed state mode allows the device to be
used as a support chip
"National's DS90CP04 crosspoint switch is our answer to the ever
increasing demand from customers for a versatile system solution that combines
high performance, low power and ease-of-use," said Mark Sauerwald, Network
Interface Business Unit product marketing manager, National Semiconductor.
"There are many metro and enterprise communications network systems that can
use the DS90CP04 as 'glue' logic that provides buffering, redundancy switching
or multiplexing."
Data paths of the DS90CP04 are fully differential from input to output for
low EMI. The non-blocking architecture allows connections of any input to any
output. The device's switch matrix consists of four differential 4:1
multiplexors. Each output channel connects to one of the four inputs common
to all multiplexors and is capable of operating at 2.5 Gbps and even at
3.125 Gbps depending on loading and required signal integrity.
National's DS90CP04 excels in the following four primary applications. In
the long haul and metro communications area where speeds of 2.5 Gbps are
commonly used, the DS90CP04 provides a versatile switch-fabric solution for
both simple and complex configurations. In serial digital interfaces used in
the broadcast video industry, the new device accommodates data rates for
systems that include 270 Megabit per second (Mbps) and 360 Mbps for standard
definition and 1.5 Gbps for high-definition television. The DS90CP04 is also
ideal for protection switching for Gigabit Ethernet serial streams through a
backplane. Another application is in the tributary cards of multi-access
controllers used to concentrate several data and voice streams into one
high-speed link.
Key features of National's DS90CP04 include:
-- Broadside pin-out
-- Ability to expand to larger switch arrays
-- Tri-state LVDS outputs
-- Serial control interface with read-back capability
-- Double register loading and
-- Single 2.5 V supply
The device's common mode input range is rail to rail and its temperature
range is from -40 to +85 degrees Fahrenheit. The DS90CP04 is manufactured on
the company's advanced CMOS process technology.
